[b]Animated culture[/b] December 29, 2006 11:00pm ANIMATION in Japan isn't just kids' stuff, with the country's animation industry earning billions of dollars annually from sales to television channels and cinema distributors at home and abroad. In 2004, according to its External Trade Organisation, Japan's anime exports to the US alone were worth more than $3 billion. Now the first film program in Brisbane's new Gallery of Modern Art's Australian Cinematheque, Japan Fantastic: Before and Beyond Anime, will explore the origins of animation in Japan from the 1920s through to its prominence in modern culture.
