Takaya a regular high school student who wants nothing more than to protect his best friend Yuzuru Narita and live a normal life.

His life changes when Nobutsuna Naoe -- an intense and charismatic older man -- informs Takaya that he is in fact the reincarnation of Lord Kagetora

Lord Kagetora was the adopted son of a noble samurai lord, Kenshin Uesugi. He is originally from the Hojo clan; his family clan who essentially gave him over to other clans in order to form alliances with them.

The first clan to receive Kagetora was the Tekeda clan, where he apparently suffered deep humilation. After that, he was given over to the Uesugi clan, again to help form an alliance. This is where his original lifespan comes to an end. It would be around 400 years ago from the current time in which the anime takes place. But his soul, and the soul of others (like Naoe) lived on.

Back in the current world, Naoe, himself a "possessor," or a soul reborn through time, reawakens Takaya's abilities to exorcise evil spirits and fight the Feudal Underworld.

The Feudal world is a collection of restless warrior spirits bent on modern-day conquest.

While most possessors remember their former lives before being reincarnated, Takaya does not, and is often hostile towards any effort for the complete recovery of his memory.

As the plot unfolds, the complex history of these two characters and their past suggests why he's so hostile, and the true nature of the complicated and emotionally challenging relationship between the two (Naoe and Kagetora) provides the backdrop for a melodrama that spans several generations of Japanese history.

Pay attention to what happened "30 years ago". The current lifetime is not the first time these characters were reincarnated in human form. "30 years ago" from the current time that the anime takes place, Naoe does something to Lord Kagetora which has Kagetora proclaiming to Naoe: "I'll never forgive for the rest of eternity!"

Chief among the antagonists of the series are the Hojo and Fuma clans, once at war with and eventually overthrown by Lord Kenshin Uesugi. Remember, the Uesugi clan became Kagetora's adoptive family.

As they ascend to the living world to renew their ancient war, Naoe, Takaya, and two other possessors gear up to prevent these two clans from re-starting an ancient war.
